I mean, not really, of course. Not on purpose. But sometimes you've just got to do whatever makes you happy, you know? So if you want to try something new, why not? Because someone will give you a weird look?

Who cares?

Okay, too many questions.

Contrary to popular belief, there's really no point in waiting for a certain setting (e.g. New Year's) to change. If you want to change something about yourself, just do it. Who cares if everyone is surprised? (How dare you suddenly show up with a new look on a random Tuesday!) You can't just sit around waiting for a certain day to introduce a new you.

It's kind of like this post. I bet you all thought I'd forgotten about this blog again, but nope. I actually have a million drafts saved, but I just can't figure out how to finish them. And some are just too personal. But anyway, here I am! Posting my first completed post in months on a random (yet wonderful) Saturday.

Back to the point. I just don't understand the idea of suppressing a sudden urge to change something about yourself until a certain date. Especially any teens out there. I mean, I'm a teenager. I am a changing individual. If I decide, while shopping after a substantial amount of time has passed since my last visit to the mall, that I now prefer bright neon colored dresses, despite the fact that my wardrobe consists largely of plain jeans and bland shirts, than the next day I will be wearing one of the aforementioned abnormally bright neon colored dresses. And everyone will wonder when the last time I ever wore one before was, to which the answer would likely be... fifth grade. (Wow, that's a long time, maybe I should go by one.)

Well, I think you get the picture. Maybe. Too much ranting? But really, if you've been dying to chop off all your hair, just do it! Or, on the non-superficial side, if you're really shy or something, and you really want to work on being more outgoing, maybe, but you're worried you'll get comments like "Whoa! I've never heard you speak before," just go for it, and ignore the jerks.

And before anyone in a particularly bitter mood decides to bite my head, I realize that maybe we don't want the world to turn into a bunch of volatile freaks who become a brand new person every day. (Although I'm sure you weren't going to point that out.) However, I do feel that suppressing any positive changes you might undergo is not good. People change sometimes, and sometimes for the better, so why wait until next year to express it?

Also, I think my writing style has changed a lot too. Have you noticed? I think this post is more casual and sarcastic than most, but oh well. Have a super fantastic day!

"Give up"? My new... philosophy? Okay, so maybe at some point I was a bit of a quitter. Back in middle school. And yeah, I still give up on things every once in a while. But then again who doesn't?

I should probably explain. This past year, I started trying lots of new activities, which I've mentioned before. But being a beginner among the more advanced isn't easy.

Sure, no one's really made fun of me or anything, but (in soccer and dance) I'm the one who gets singled out by the coach/teacher. I mean, in those two things, I was a total and complete beginner. There were other kids on my soccer team who had never played before, but they'd at least played lacrosse, or had been on the cross country team. And in ballet and jazz, I was literally the only one who knew nothing.

I guess if you're not into stepping outside of your comfort zone, that sounds like a nightmare, and you might be asking yourself why on earth I torture myself like that.

Well, first of all, these are things I've always wanted to do. (Admittedly though, the desire to play soccer was more recent, and more tied to me wanting to be more athletic.) Seriously, I've wanted to take ballet and jazz classes since I was four or five. And I guess running for class president was one of those things I felt I had to do before leaving high school. No point in having unnecessary regrets.

And before the uplifting part of this post, I should point out that it's not such a bad thing to be bad at something. Being a beginner means there's only room for improvement, and that's something positive to focus on. No one is great at something at first. But if you stick with it, if you keep trying, eventually you'll be the one that the newbie envies.

So in the past year: I joined the JV soccer team, which was a huge feat all in itself for me. Last year I thought I was a non-athletic as anyone could be-- I could barely run for five minutes. But now I run all the time, and even go to the gym pretty often. And it's fun. Plus, I even made a goal at my first game ever. Then, I decided I wanted to join my school's student government, and I made a slightly impulsive decision to run for class president. But I won! And after a while, I realized taking chances and trying new things was just making my life better. So in June I started taking ballet and jazz classes, and while I still suck pretty badly, I'm getting better. And after every class I feel amazing.

I'll admit, at first I want to quit soccer, and dance, and I regretted handing in that student government sign-up sheet. Sure, sitting at home would have been easier, and it was tempting sometimes, but it also would have gotten me nowhere.

So try something new, don't give up on it, and if you don't know what you're doing, just fake it (as I've learned in dance class)!

Okay, so maybe my examples aren't very "deep", but determination and perseverance can apply to anything, really.

Is there anything you really want to do, but you feel that you'll fail at?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://likeasnowflake.blogspot.com/2011/08/give-up-what-does-that-mean-get-out.html' title='"Give up"? Basically I've had writer's block (still) and no alone time. And I'm not one of those people who can just get on the computer and start blogging with my entire family in the room. I can't even stay on the computer uninterrupted for a long enough period of time to write an entire post.

Not that that's a good excuse.

Anyway. You know how people always say "everyone is good at something"?

And how a lot of people have that one thing that they're just really really good at? Or maybe you disagree, and feel that many people have no talents, I don't know. Maybe I just feel like everyone is talented in some way because I'm constantly surrounded by talented people at my school.

But, I'm a super-ambitious-overachiever and perfectionist, and I kind of wish I had a thing that I was really good at. (But really, who doesn't? I mean, even people who are super talented probably feel like they're still not good enough sometimes, right?)

I guess for me, that one thing used to be school. I used to be a fantastic (maybe annoying) straight-A student-nerd. And maybe even music, at some point. Until my parents made me stop taking lessons, I guess.

Okay, I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this. I guess I'm trying to figure out why I suddenly started doing all these new things, and hoping that you'll get something out of this too. Are you lost yet?

So, I was good at academics. Maybe I would have had a chance at discovering another talent, but when I was younger my parents were not supportive of me doing anything extracurricular (except for piano lessons for a while). But, I didn't. And this year, my perfect student record was destroyed. Yeah, IB is not easy. So, since I felt like a not-so-great student, and I realized I had hardly any extracurricular activities, I started trying new extracurriculars. Like soccer, running for class president, ballet, jazz, and various volunteer clubs and organizations.

Okay, honestly I wrote all of the above ^ a while ago. It seemed too jumbled to publish and I wasn't sure how to finish it. I should add that being a beginner in something makes it seem like everyone else is amazing at that one thing. I'm guess I'm one of those all around people. Okay (and even good, sometimes) at lots of things, not fantastic at one particular thing. And maybe that's not so bad. Or maybe we all do have something (or things) we're really good at, even if we don't know it yet. I certainly don't think anyone is talent-less. Which brings me to my next topic. Try something new, maybe something you've always wanted to do, and stick with it.

Yeah, that means there's going to be a new post. So come back later.

Hello? Anyway...

Reviving this blog in 3...2...1... NOW!

So, where have I been?
Well, nowhere, actually. Maybe a bit overloaded with school work, maybe a bit lazy, you know-- the usual. The past few weeks I've actually had the time and motivation, but I haven't had a computer. (And, I know, who doesn't own a computer these days, right?)

Oh yeah, and it's summer! But since I'm much more college app-conscious this year, I have to find something productive to do. Like get a job/internship, or volunteer. Don't just ignore this post thinking I've just turned into a hippie or something (not that there's anything wrong with hippies). This is important.

A while ago I had to do a public service announcement for school and, as you might guess from the title, I did mine on trash. Well, more specifically, recycling. Anyway, in the process I found some shocking statistics on garbage. It's surprising we're not plowing through trash on sidewalks daily already.

The average person in the western world produces more than 500 kg (over 1,100 pounds) of trash per year. In the U.S., which is responsible for a quarter of the world's trash, the average person produces more than 1,600 pounds of trash each year (according to forbes.com). Worldwide, more than 1 billion tons of waste are produced every year.

I don't think you need me to tell you that that's a lot of trash.

Only about 20% of trash is recycled, and while that's better than nothing, about 80% could be recycled. So why isn't it?

Sure, you could just through that bottle away and forget about it, but it's not going to disappear. Well, at least not for about 1,000 years. You might never see your trash again, but your kids or grand-kids might. Find somewhere to recycle it instead. (And make sure you take the caps off bottles first, or they might not get recycled.)

So, if you're the average trash producer, and you recycle as much as you can, you'll only make about 100 kg of trash each year instead of 500 kg. And what if everyone did? 200,000 pounds instead of 1 billion per year. Huge difference. Then maybe we could imagine a future without mountains of garbage everywhere. Along with less dying animals and pollution. What are your thoughts on recycling? Is taking care of the environment worth the cost?

Reduce, reuse, recycle, and tell your friends and family too.

Finally Back

September?! I haven't posted since September? Whoa. Life's just moving so quickly lately.

Well it's great to be back. I haven't forgotten about this blog, trust me. In the past few months I've been thinking about what to post next, even though I barely have time to spend in the blogging world anymore... I've been super busy lately, but I think I've mentioned that a few times before. Old news.

New news: While mountains of schoolwork and wasted hours procrastination have been taking up my time as usual, I've also started playing soccer, joined some service clubs at school, and I've basically become (along with my older sister) my little brother's "parent" since my irresponsible (yes, I know, harsh) mother is literally never home and my dad lives hours away. I think you'll be hearing more (and by more I mean a future post) about my mother as my relationship with her gradually deteriorates with each day she spends across town at her boyfriend's house and fails to realize that she still has three children to take care of. Sorry, too much rambling?

But guess what? It's winter break! And that means I have some free time. Yes, some. Unfortunately my teachers have mistaken two weeks for an eternity and I have a ton of homework. (No surprise). Plus, I was sick for the first few days of my break. I also made this to-do list with 17 things listed so that I wouldn't waste my break in front of the TV and computer. Good news: it's actually working. So far I've accomplished three of the 17 tasks and at least started another seven. I know that doesn't sound like much, but most of these things are long-term, like fixing my sleeping schedule and studying for my AP exams. The other seven things are short-term, like doing homework assignments or buying something I need. Blogging was on the list too (that's another check mark).

Lately everything's been kind of disoriented and I've been way too stressed out. So that's why I've resorted to making a to-do list. Believe it or not, cleaning my room has really helped. I guess being so disorganized was affecting me more than I thought. Catching up in pre-calc has really helped too. And all my other classes. Every break/holiday I promise myself I'll get stuff done, but I never really do. I guess a mental to-do list wasn't as effective, and probably just more stressful. Then again, should I even have a to-do list over the holidays?

To be honest, I started writing a few posts a few months ago, and every time I've logged onto blogger I've tried to finish them, but just felt that they weren't very good. I think I'll just re-write some of them.

How have you all been lately? Oh and, happy holidays! I know it's a little late, but better late than never, right? (Well, maybe not. It's that kind of thinking that gets me 10% off every other English homework assignment.) I feel like this post is a bit jumbled and a little all over the place, but I have so much to say!

How To Be Nicer: Tip #4

Tip #4: Think about what you say.

It should be common sense, but some people just don't. Before you say something to someone, especially if it's something hurtful, think about it. Please. You probably don't know what they're going through, and the situation they're in. Even if you think you know everything about him/her, there's a good chance you actually don't. Think about how what you say might hurt them more than you thought it would, and how much it could affect them. You never exactly know what someone's reaction will be. And, honestly, if you say something hurtful to someone anyway, their opinion of you is probably going to worsen.
Cliche? Definitely. But, come on, pretty much everything in this blog is pretty cliche. But that shouldn't mean we ignore it. Anyway, I'll probably post something about cliche stuff later, because I just realized that this is a completely different topic.

So, to get back on topic, have you ever had a bad day? Or a bad week/month/year/(insert-time-period-here)? We all have, and sometimes if someone's having a bad day (or whatever bad amount of time) saying something offensive is just going to make them feel a million times worse. You might not even realize that you've just made them feel pretty depressed, though. That's one of the problems, here.

Sure, it's always good to ignore these offensive comments and such, but sometimes (especially if your friend says it) you just can't. Also, I've noticed that this often occurs as a result of accusations or just making fun of someone. Stop and get the full story first. False accusations are just the worst, especially when you realize you're wrong. And making fun of others? It's just making them self-conscious. It's really not necessary.

Well anyway, I doubt your one of those mean people who intentionally put others down. Sometimes we just say something offensive or rude without thinking about it, and sometimes it can really hurt someone, unfortunately. Think about how insulting your comment might be, and please don't just assume something about someone.

What's Society's Problem?

(credit)

Well, to be blunt, we are. Okay, maybe not you. And maybe not me either. But "we" in general are the cause for society's issues, because, you know, we're part of society. Since society is made up of such a large and varying group of people (a.k.a. everyone) it has a personality that's ever-changing. Sometimes society is nice to us. Sometimes society let's us go with the crowd and feel like we fit in for once.
This seems to be quite uncommon, though. Let's face it; society's good moods are not the norm (for most of us) and can be pretty fickle. Maybe you've noticed that society is more often a huge bully-- it's discriminating, mean, excluding, hurtful, and bossy. Or, maybe you're one of those people looking at your computer screen wondering what in the world I'm talking about. In that case, society likes you (though more than likely you're it's frenemy) and you mostly fit in. Good for you.
Actually, it's not really good for you. See, if you're perfectly fine with society because you fit in, then there are more than likely a ton of people who dislike you for liking the way society is.

But wait, there's another option. Maybe you're more like me and you don't exactly fit in or not fit in. If you're even more like me, than you're perfectly fine with all the people society hates (except for the people who do things that are illegal, hateful, etc. of course) and you don't really mind those people who try to fit in, either. We're all just people, after all. So, if your in the middle... well, that's exactly your problem. You're stuck in the middle.

So really, you just can't win. Sure some places in society have their pros, but they also have cons. All the places in society pretty much do.

Society is sort of telling us what we can and can't do. As an example: society tells me I shouldn't be good at math or science (as if gender has anything to do with thought), that if I make good grades I'm a "nerd" , that if I like to play instruments I'm a "band geek", and that if I think differently I'm "weird", etc. Then again, that's nothing compared to what other people are told: their religion is wrong, their sexuality is wrong, their race is wrong, or their choices are just wrong. And let's not forget what society tells basically everyone. No matter what, you're just not good enough. But that's not really true, is it?

Okay, I'll stop personifying society now. Do you get the point? And despite what you might be thinking, I'm not telling you that our society is hopeless. As I said, we're society's problem in the first place. Look at the society that we (and others before us) have created. If we don't like it, why do we go along with it? Seriously, people are constantly doing things like this. I guess it's just easier to go along with something than to try to change it. Pretty sad.

Anyway, if you aren't so happy with the way society is, stop pretending you are. I'm sure some of you will disagree with this post, but before you do ask yourself if society is really as great as you think. And, of course, I can't be completely negative here; society has a ton of problems, but it surely isn't as bad as it could be, and it's certainly come a long way. There is, however, some definite room for improvement. But the best part is, since we're all part of society, we can all help change society (no matter how insignificant you feel). There will probably be more posts related to this one later-- there's too much to talk about to fit in just one post. Please post your thoughts on the subject, whether you agree or disagree!

Also, an off topic note: I'd like to apologize for my lack of posts. (It's been more than a week!) I've been extremely busy with school work and such this week. (As in, I've-been-staying-up-past-2-am-to-do-homework busy.) I hope you understand, and I'll try to post a little more often. I was really starting to miss my blog.

Let's Talk About Coffee!

(credit)

I know this is sort of related to the sleep post, but I was actually going to post this a long time ago. So, this isn't really an add-on, and sorry if you dislike health topics.

Anyway, most of us are aware of the magic of coffee-- it wakes you up, and overall usually makes you feel better. But, coffee actually does more than that. As it turns out, coffee is filled with benefits (if you drink it in moderation).

Maybe you've heard that coffee is unhealthy, but drinking coffee in moderation has benefits that out-weigh the risks. Especially if you use paper filters, which most people do. (The risk of cholesterol is eliminated by paper coffee filters, which remove the lipids.) If you read this Wikipedia article, most of the health risks only apply if you drink too much coffee (more than a few cups) or have been proven as not very harmful at all.

Apparently, coffee helps reduce the risk for a number of diseases, diabetes, cavities, and some types of cancer. It's also an antioxidant and helps to increase your metabolism. Even more benefits are listed on WebMD (for some reason it's under "men's health"...? Are they saying women don't drink coffee or something? Maybe it's just the type of benefits they're discussing. Anyway, it's still informative.)

So, it seems like coffee is pretty great, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I only drink one cup, and only if I'm tired. I'm not exactly a coffee addict. But, if you are a coffee addict (and you don't drink too much coffee), then you should feel a little better about your coffee habits now. I'm not claiming that coffee is super healthy or anything-- it obviously has some negative aspects-- I'm just pointing out the benefits of it.

Random picture of coffee I drew for
you guys. This is exactly what you
shouldn't do.

Overall, if you don't like coffee, or if it has bad effects on you, then you still shouldn't drink it. But, if you really like coffee, now you have more reasons to drink it. Just don't drink too much, or it becomes an unhealthy habit. (You can also read this Harvard study.)

So, any opinions? Are you a coffee drinker, or not? Do you think coffee is healthy, or are you not convinced? How much coffee do you usually drink? And, does coffee have any weird effects on you?

How To Be Nicer: Tip #3

(credit)

Tip #3: Don't be so jealous.
First of all, I realize that not all jealousy is necessarily bad. I'm mostly talking about jealousy causing hatred, so keep that in mind, please. So, moving on.
Jealousy isn't cool. It can make us hate someone for no reason, bring us unnecessary enemies, ruin relationships, and turn friends into 'frenemies.' Almost everyone is gets at least a little jealous once in a while. I would say that maybe being a little envious isn't so bad, but when you start to resent someone for something they have that you don't, it becomes a problem. (Read: Envy vs. Jealousy.)
Jealousy seems to cause a lot of problems. How many people are actually nice to someone they're jealous of? Not fake-nice, but sincerely nice? As in, you're jealous of someone (which means your resentful), but you still really like them. Those two things just don't seem to go together, in my opinion.
Sometimes the reason for your jealousy isn't even "real." For example, someone gets jealous because their significant other is talking to someone else who you feel is somehow in competition with you. This may not be the case at all, which would mean you're feeling jealousy and hate towards someone for basically no reason. Or, maybe your best friend (forever) has recently been hanging out with someone else a lot. So, you get jealous and, again, possibly see this person as your competition because he/she is "stealing" your best friend. Unlikely. This kind of jealousy is often the result of fear, low self-esteem, or low confidence, among other things similar to those.

People aren't just "stolen" from you by someone "better." In these two scenarios, you'd probably be blaming the wrong person. But, let's save that subject for another post. I guess my point here is that most people your jealous of (if you're jealous of people in this way) are not your competition. Why not befriend them instead of hating them for something they aren't trying to do?

So, what about jealousy over other things? Well, I would certainly I hope that you wouldn't resent someone so much over an object, but I know it happens. It's okay to want something that someone has, for the most part, but it's not okay to dislike them because they have it and you don't.

I admit that I've been jealous before. Of course. Who hasn't? But if I find that jealousy is creeping up, I remind myself that there's no reason to blame that person. They haven't actually done anything, have they? I can accept that I want something, but I realize that I can't resent someone for having something that I don't. I think, if anything, I mostly only get envious now-- but many times that envy motivates me to actually do something about it.

Jealous Green-eyed Monster. (Yes, I
drew this for you with my oh-so-
amazing drawing skills. Like it?)

You see, there's always something to be jealous of. If everyone just let that jealousy rule their lives, we wouldn't have any friends, and there wouldn't be any kindness in the world. (Excuse me for the tackiness.) You might be jealous of someone, but chances are someone else is jealous of you. Think about all of the envy-worthy things you have before you decide to become jealous. (Oh look, more positive thinking.) And think about how you would feel if someone resented you for simply having something, or being accused for something you didn't even do. Think about what you're jealous of, why you're jealous, and whether it's a good reason to be jealous or not. (Chances are, it's not. At least try to change that feeling of jealousy into envy, instead. But don't be hateful.) Is hate ever a good thing?

Don't worry, there are ways to overcome jealousy. (If there weren't why would I write about it?) Here's an article that can probably help you overcome jealousy a little better than I can.

As always, I want to know how you feel about the post. Do you get jealous easily? Do you think jealousy is okay? And, have you ever been the cause of someone's jealousy. Please feel free to share all thoughts and opinions.

Oh, and I almost forgot: Today is the blog's month-iversary! Maybe that's just the high school life I've been resigned to for being in a college prep program, though (and yes, I realize that college will probably be worse). With school quickly approaching, I'm dreading feeling like I do today almost everyday. (Today I'm super tired as a result of being sick and being unable to sleep well.) Hurray for coffee! I'm really going to try to get more sleep, but I get a ridiculous amount of homework. In fact, it's commonly accepted in my school that most of us won't get enough sleep. Seriously, they gave us advice pamphlets and one of the topics was how to pull an all-nighter. Did you know that only about 20% of teens actually get enough sleep? (According to this.) I didn't know the number was that low. I'm seriously going to try to get more sleep this school year. I'll let you know how it goes.

Guess what I just found out? According to this article, During the last school year I was sleep deprived! Mostly during the end of the school year, and especially during exam week, which is probably the worst time to be sleep deprived. Eventually this vicious cycle started: I would get maybe six hours of sleep, and in the evenings I'd fall asleep while doing my homework or something. So guess what? I'd stay up later in order to finish my homework, therefore getting less sleep, and the cycle continues. At least I'm not one of those people who stay awake for days on end for fun. I do know a few.

Anyway, here's some advice: get enough sleep. There are some serious side effects associated with not getting enough sleep. Some include weight gain, developing diabetes, problems with thinking straight, fatigue, and, of course, drowsiness. If you go too long without sleep you'll end up acting like you're a bit drunk. Good news though: getting about an extra 30 minutes of sleep everyday can really improve your health.
Try to cut down on the TV or internet, if you're not getting enough sleep. One of my problems, as you may know, is procrastinating. But, it wasn't as big of a problem during the second half of the school year.

So, do you get enough sleep every night? Have you ever had any sleeping disorders? Do you think you function just fine after getting less than eight hours of sleep? By the way, happy Friday the 13th! (No, I'm not superstitious.)

Taking Everything For Granted

(credit)

I admit that I take things for granted. I really try not to, but I still do. I think everyone takes at least a few things for granted, even if they don't realize it. That's not so bad, but there are some who can't even appreciate the most basic things. Just think about all those things that people commonly take for granted-- technology, food, water, your five senses, functioning body parts, other people, nature, shelter, time, being alive. Is there something in that insignificantly small list that you take for granted? Your life could be so much worse. Think about it.

I just hate listening to other people complain about the smallest, unimportant things. I can't stand when someone takes everything, and I mean everything, for granted. Especially when they have so much to appreciate.

We're reminded of these things which many of us take for granted everyday. Just watch the news, or one of those tragic documentaries. Sure, we see it, and we think something like, "oh, that's so tragic. I feel so bad for them. I'm glad that's not me," but the majority of us will go on with our lives, forget what we saw, and take for granted that it wasn't us.

Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. We've all (probably) done this at some point, including me. (Though, like I said, I really try not to, and I think I'm getting better at it.) You know, those everyday problems that most of us make such a big deal out of are actually really petty. I bet you could think of something that you complained about today, and replace it with a "at least I ____." Here are some examples which I've so kindly made up for you: Bad hair day? At least you have hair. You're car won't start? At least you have a car. You're not happy with your weight? At least you have a functioning body. You messed up on you speech? At least you can speak.

Get the picture? That list of examples could go on and on.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but this not-taking-things-for-granted thing has a lot to do with optimism. Like I've said before, try to think more positively.

Story time! (Yay!) First of all, I have to share this very well known quote with you: "You don't know what you have until it's gone." I think this happens a lot because of taking what you have for granted. When I was little, my dad gave me this kitten (though there were many objections by my mom). I loved the kitten, but I was a kid, and I took her for granted. Of course, this ends tragically. She got run over by a car, and killed. I still miss her, in fact. Well, anyway I learned that I should realize what I have while I still have it. I don't take my pets (or other things, for that matter) for granted anymore. I'd like to point out, though, that learning the hard way sucks. Also, I'm guessing that if you don't like cats you might not understand this, but I hope you still get the point of the story.

I greatly encourage you to write a list of things that you take for granted or did take for granted. Or something like that. I'm sure if you kept adding to it, it would become ridiculously long. Oh, and one more cliche line: life's too short to take things for granted. I know how you love those cliche sentences.

What are your thoughts about the post? What's something that you used to take for granted, or just realized that you take for granted?

How To Be Nicer: Tip #2

(credit)

I bet you've just been anxiously waiting for this. Well, maybe not. Anyway, here's your tip:

Tip #2: Be open-minded.
Don't you just hate it when you tell someone something and this person wrinkles his/her face, seemingly disgusted, because he/she just doesn't understand. Or, worse, someone finds out something about you and completely rejects you as a person because he/she is so ridiculously close-minded.

"Oh, you're one of those people. I guess we can't be friends anymore. And we'll have to argue over what's right/wrong, even though I know I'm right."

Please don't take that example too seriously. Also, I don't recall something like this happening to me personally, but it annoys me just seeing others get treated like this. Although, I probably wouldn't exactly want to be friends with someone who couldn't manage to be a bit open-minded. I've seen this happen to people close to me, though. Or just a classmate being talked behind his/her back. It's definitely not nice.

I suppose this goes back to the issue with being different. I'd imagine that many of these issues with being close-minded have to do with politics, religion, sexuality, beliefs, culture, appearances, etc. (Please let me know if I missed a major issue.) I also feel the need to point out that this post is not about being open-minded about things that are illegal, hateful, or even unhealthy.

You don't have to be best friends with someone who's just so different you can't understand, but just be nice to him/her. It'll make a huge difference them if you're just a little more understanding. I see no point in arguing with someone because you're close minded; it's extremely unlikely that you're going to change him/her.

By the way, I realize that these How To Be Nicer tips are kind of corny, but they're also true.

As always, you're thoughts and opinions are welcome!

I'll Procrastinate Later

In case you can't tell by the title, this post is about procrastination (yes, run along non-procrastinators). As it turns out, there are a ton of reasons why people procrastinate. You might procrastinate because you want perfection, you get distracted easily, you fear failure, you don't believe in yourself, you're overwhelmed, you can't prioritize, you're disorganized, etc. The most common procrastinating is casual procrastination (e.g. you stop what your doing to check your Facebook or text someone). I bet that sounds familiar.

Have you figured out why you procrastinate yet? Chances are, if you procrastinate you have plenty of "logical" reasons for doing so. You work better under pressure? Or maybe it's just that the other thing you're doing is important too? Perhaps you're just too stressed and you need to relax right now? Of course, the most famous excuse is that you have plenty of time to do it later. Figure out what your "reasons" are, and remind yourself that they're not really reasons, just bad excuses (usually).

In fact, most people who "work better under pressure" actually don't. And while you might feel productive doing another task, you need to prioritize-- decide which really needs to be done first. Choosing to relax now and stress later is actually a common idea (known as instant gratification). Actually, you're not really going to relax. Somewhere in the back of your mind you'll be stressing over the work you still have to do-- but, if you do the work first and relax later, you'll actually relax. Oh, and if you think you have plenty of time, you probably don't, and you probably already know that, deep down (which means more stress).

I guess you could always blame it on the world; tell yourself there are too many deadlines, too many things to do, that it's not your fault, etc. (more on blaming later). But, I think it would be better to try and solve the problem, not just ignore it. (Here's a good article on how to stop procrastinating.)

Story time! (Woo!) You didn't think I was just writing this for no reason, or making it up, did you? No, I have procrastinating problems too. After reading a few articles, I've come to the conclusion that I procrastinate casually, and because I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. I also tend to procrastinate by doing something productive instead of what I should be doing, even though it's not as much of a priority. For example, I'll work on my science homework that's due at the end of the week instead of my history homework that's due the next day, because I like science and hate history. So, guess what happens? My science homework is done in plenty of time, and I might even feel a bit accomplished, but I still have to stay up late finishing my history homework. Not fun. Oh, and I'm also one of those not-as-bad-as-some procrastinators who will finish their work no matter what. In other words, some procrastinators never get around to completing a task, but some will still do it just, well, later. Have you noticed that most of my posts are at around 11:30 pm? Procrastination. I do make sure to finish the post that day, just barely. (Sometimes, I am actually really busy though.) Fortunately, I think I'm actually getting better about not procrastinating as much. Taking small steps is really important. I have. More than one, actually, and it's not something I'm exactly proud of. Maybe you can't be seen without make-up on, or you just have to have your nails done at all times. Maybe you have to wear a certain style of clothing at all times, or you have to do your hair a certain way.

Personally, my problem started in seventh grade with make-up and a hair straightening iron. Doesn't really sound too bad, right? Well, the problem is that I wouldn't go out of the house without eye liner on and without my hair completely straight. When I was thirteen.

I'm not completely sure why I was like this, but I think I had some issues. I did get over it, though. Half-way through eighth grade I realized that I actually look pretty good without make up. Although, I'm disappointed to say that it took as the summer after ninth grade for me to be okay with going out of the house without straightening my hair. Looking back, I'd say it was quite pathetic. I actually like my hair curly now, especially since it's not so frizzy anymore. (In case you're wondering, I got over my straight-hair-obsession after being forced to go without my straightener for a month. At the time, it was almost torture... again, pathetic.)

I'd like to point out that those obsessions were quite small compared to some that others have. Some are just strange. Things like plastic surgery addictions make my story sound like nothing (read this is if you don't believe me). Also, I think it's pretty safe to say that the most common superficial obsession is weight. Too many people are addicted to there scales, mirrors, tape measures, and diets.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying criticizing you for wearing make-up, doing your hair, or weighing yourself. I'm just saying that you shouldn't feel like you have to, and if you shouldn't feel ugly if you don't. Hopefully your "addiction" is reversible (if you have one). Maybe if you skip the make up, or the excessive hairstyling, or the compulsive weighing, you'll realize that you're actually pretty without it. Seriously, try it.

Any thoughts? Tell me one of your superficial addiction stories if you have one-- I told you one of mine, after all. I hope you like the post!

How To Be Nicer: Tip #1

(credit)

I've been thinking about making a post like this, but then, as I thought of more things to add, I realized it would be way too long. Instead, I'll post a tip about being nicer every few days. The world could always use more niceness, right? Even if you're already really nice, I'm sure a few reminders couldn't hurt. Well, anyway here's tip #1:

Tip #1: Stop judging.
Seriously. No one likes to be judged, and I'm pretty sure that you're not an exception. We've all judged others before (myself included, though not proudly) and we've all been judged. But, what's the point? These judgments are almost never right and they're often hurtful. As I've talked about before, judging others is one of those instinctual actions that we do to categorize things.

It's not hopeless, though. If you catch yourself automatically judging someone, try to ignore the judgment. How many of your judgments have ever been right? I can honestly say that almost none of mine have been right. Once I thought this girl that I'd just met was a complete snob and really mean, but guess what? I was totally wrong, and later we became best friends. I'm guessing that if I had stuck to that judgment we would have become something more along the lines of enemies.

Anyway, if no one likes being judged, then why does everyone do it? Because everyone else does? That's a crappy excuse. Maybe if you don't judge as much you'll see more opportunities for friendship. Just a thought.

Opinions? If you'd like to know more, you can read this study.

Why You Should Take a Vacation

Work, work, work. After a while, constantly working is going to have some serious consequences, such as stress and even premature death. Going a few years without a break is just a bad idea. In fact, it's unhealthy. So, let's talk about some of the many benefits of taking a much-needed vacation every so often.

We all know that vacations are fun and relaxing. They can reduce your stress levels significantly, as it turns out. Not to mention the great mood you'll be in a few days later. Also, taking a break from your daily schedule every once in a while is important. It just gets boring, doesn't it?

Guess what else? Taking a vacation can actually improve your work productivity. It increases your creativity as well. Did you know that taking a vacation can result in at least five weeks of less stress? (Read this.)

Of course, vacations also bring memories, time for yourself, and a feeling of adventure. And one of the best parts is seeing how others live (if you go somewhere pretty far).

Do you really need me to give you all these reasons for taking a vacation? All in all, a vacation will make you happier, and not just for the time you're there. Oh, and it doesn't even have to be anything fancy or super expensive. Go to the beach for a bit, or maybe visit the spa. Just do something to give yourself a break. I'm pretty sure you deserve it. Next time your thinking about skipping that vacation, just remember: it's good for your health.

How often do you take vacations? Do you feel better afterward? If you have any tips please share them. I hope you're not wasting your summer!

The World's Not Black and White

Stop treating it like it is. Yes, I'm talking about "black or white" thinking. You know, everything's either black or white, good or bad, all or nothing, right or wrong, this or that. If you think like this, there's no balance, and chances are you're not too open-minded.

So, why do people think like this? Well, it goes back to our natural instinct to categorize. (Remember "Labels and Stereotypes"?) Some people just have very broad categories. They can become so extreme that everything is either one thing or the complete opposite. (Read this.)

Thinking in extremes can have some pretty bad affects on you too. You'd think something you did was completely right or totally wrong, for example. Sure, if you think it was completely right you might feel pretty good. But what if you thought it was completely wrong? Then you'd just feel awful, beating yourself up over it for no reason. It might have not even been that bad. Black or white thinking would most likely mean living an unhappy life (or a perfectly happy one, but which is more likely?).

Not only is this kind of thinking problematic for you; it also affects people around you. Think about it: you either love someone or hate him/her. Every person is either your best friend or your worst enemy. That would mean that the majority of people can't be your friend. That doesn't sound very appealing, does it? Even worse, treating others like this is just going to hurt them. Also, if you think in terms of extremes you'll probably be less likely to compromise.

I've never really been the type to think of things as one way or the complete other. It just doesn't make sense to me-- there's always a balance, right? Also, I don't exactly agree with thinking of things as a "spectrum of gray." I know it's supposed to go along with the black and white thing, but it still sounds pretty limiting. Maybe it's a dumb idea, but I think it sounds better to think of things as a spectrum of colors. Surely most things are more complex than some shades of gray; especially people.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out this common problem. Thinking like this is never going to make anyone, including you, happy. As I've said before, try to be a little more open-minded, and consider that everything has more than two possibilities.

Do you agree that black and white thinking is a problem? Unfortunately, there is apparently something wrong with being different in some people's opinions. We've all heard that if everyone was the same the world would be boring. It's so true, but there are still so many people trying to be just like everyone else, or places where people are forced to conform. Some people try to change themselves to fit the norm because they want to be accepted. Even following trends, which many people wouldn't think twice about, is sort of like trying to be like everyone else.

What's really so great about being just like everyone else? Fitting in, maybe? And people who are forced to conform are probably not very happy with having to (I certainly wouldn't be). Likewise, trying to change yourself into someone your not isn't going to work-- you'll probably just end up unhappy. Furthermore, trends (especially fashion trends) are usually started by people who are doing something different.

Generally, people dislike others who are different because they don't understand or they have beliefs that go against something that person does. It could be both. Ignorance might not be such a big deal, but a lot of people don't bother to try and inform themselves or, worse, they completely ignore the people trying to inform them. As for beliefs, people should never force theirs on someone else. Everyone has their own, and hating someone for having different beliefs than you seems pretty wrong to me.

So, the next time you meet someone who's different, try to understand, and try to remember that they might not believe in the same things that you do. Really, there's just no reason to hate someone for being different, especially if they can't change it. (Some would argue that the person can change, but I think that would just lead to unhappiness.) Maybe you could think of it from an opposite view point-- if everyone was like that person, and you were the person disliked for being different. (More on that later.)

What do you think, did I miss anything? Have you ever been treated wrongly for being different? Or at least a little better. Maybe it's just me? Actually, it's proven that music is quite beneficial. It's good for your health, and it's good for your brain, among other things.

Did you know music can lower stress and anxiety by about 50 percent? It also acts as a pain reliever by causing natural chemicals to be released in your brain, and can also help you relax by causing brain waves to synchronize. The speed of the music also affects your heart rate: fast music will speed up your heart rate and slow music will slow down your heart rate. And if you can't sleep you can listen to some slow music to help-- it will help you sleep better, too. Music can also possibly increase intelligence levels, at least temporarily. (Read this if you want to know more.)

With all these benefits, it should be no surprise that music is being used as therapy. In fact, listening to music can reduce chronic pain and depression by about 25 percent. Sounds like an interesting type of therapy to me. (Read more about it here.)

So, listening to music is pretty great, but what about actually playing it? There are even more benefits of playing music than just listening to it. First of all, playing an instrument relieves stress just as listening to music does, but it's probably more effective. This is certainly the case for me-- if I'm having a bad day, sometimes I'll just play one my instruments and I'll feel much better. Even if I just play scales. Moreover, playing music is a creative outlet. (Who says you can't make up your own song?) Guess what else? Playing an instrument can help students do better in school, and even affect IQ scores. That "band geek" might be smarter than you think. Of course, playing an instrument will also teach discipline and provide the musician with a sense of accomplishment. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention how enjoyable it is, especially once you get better at playing it. (Not convinced? Read about Stanford's study, or this.) Really, if you don't play any instruments, you should definitely consider it. And if you already play an instrument, it's always fun to learn another.

I just thought I'd share some information about music with you guys, since basically everyone loves music (and I mean offense if you're deaf...). Of course, one of the best things about music is that it's universal (except for the lyrics). So, no matter what kind of music you like, go listen to it-- it's good for your health.

What do you think? Does listening to music help you when you're having a bad day? And is there a certain kind of music that helps most? Do you play any instruments, or are you going to learn any?

Eating Disorders

What do you think of when you hear those words? Maybe some names of eating disorders, unhealthily skinny people, models, or possibly a close friend. What immediately pops into your head when you think of causes of eating disorders? I bet one is media. (And media is a cause.) That's probably one of the most common explanations, so I'll start with that.

Many people see supermodels' bodies as "perfect" or "ideal." However, the chance of anyone actually being that thin is 1/100. Seems pretty unlikely to me. If you're feeling pressured to look like a typical model, (who has a "normal" body) you shouldn't. They actually weigh more than 20% less than the average person. And good luck on getting as thin as a runway model; the chances of being that thin are less than 1/10. (I have nothing against models, by the way.) I'm not saying this to crush anyone's dreams, but rather to discourage people from feeling the need to be that thin. Isn't it just a little ridiculous, not to mention unhealthy, to strive to be that thin? Especially if doing so is going to cause you to develop an eating disorder. (Here's a good article.)

Another cause? Peer pressure. Maybe bullying too. People just don't think about the effects that the hurtful things they say to others can have.

More causes of eating disorders include major changes or problems that you can't prevent. Many people develop eating disorders because they feel like their body is the one thing they can control. Generally, he/she isn't actually controlling anything. Instead, the eating disorder is actually controlling him/her.

If you haven't heard of men having eating disorders, you're probably confused about why I used "he/she" and "him/her." Only women can have eating disorders, right? WRONG. At least 25% of people suffering from anorexia or bulimia are males, and at least 40% of binge eaters are males. There are possibly more, but many men do not admit to having an eating disorder because they think of it as a "woman's disease" or fear that they may thought of as homosexual. Even less seek help. As for being thought of as gay, 80% of males with an eating disorder are actually heterosexual. In fact, I think I know more guys who have body image issues than girls. The causes for eating disorders are generally the same regardless of gender. Here's a good article on this subject.

More than 10 million people in U.S. have an eating disorder. There is simply too much emphasis and value put on being thin (abnormally thin at that). Here's some proof.

Do you know anyone with an eating disorder, or have you ever had one yourself? I think it's much better now, and that's part of the reason I didn't have time to write a full article. Rest assured though, tomorrow there will be a new and interesting article. Also I'd like to point out that I really do try to post everyday, which is why I'm at least going to post this. I think you'll find it quite interesting anyway.

First of all, a few days ago I found this site, jezebel.com, which is filled with some pretty interesting and entertaining articles, along with more sites to visit. And then, on Jezebel.com, I found an article about thefbomb.org, which turned out to be a pretty amazing site. It's a feminist blog for teens, if you're wondering. That being said, I'd like to take a moment to explain what "feminist" means. Although the term is a bit misleading, it means you believe in the equality of genders. Many people do, however, think "feminism" means the belief in the superiority females (including my own sister) which I do not support. Actually, a better term for me would be "egalitarian" as I believe that all people should be treated equally. After all, discrimination is a problem beyond gender (race, sexuality, etc.). Anyway, I was just trying to clear things up, and if you believe that women should be treated like people, you should check out the site. Plus, there are some really interesting view points from people around the world, which I especially find interesting.

And now moving on to a considerably less controversial and serious topic: Twilight fans. You're probably thinking something like "oh, I wonder what they did this time" or rolling your eyes. That seems like a pretty typical reaction to me (and actually it usually is my reaction). So, a few weeks ago I read an article about how twilight fans had started biting each other, which is just disturbing and makes no sense to me. Though, some people are saying it's been around for a while... As if that's not enough, today I read an article about another weird trend for Twilight fans: "vampire veneers" (you can read about it here or here). I guess now they can bite each other with actual "fangs". Personally, I think it's just ridiculous. Of course, I have nothing against normal Twilight fans.

Oh wow, look at that. It looks like I wrote a pretty long article anyway. Let me know what you think!

Labels and Stereotypes

Everyone has been labeled before, and then associated with a stereotype. Of course, most stereotypes are far from correct, and they're too often negative. So, why do we label people, and why do we expect people to match certain stereotypes? And if almost everyone supposedly hates these labels and stereotypes, why do they still exist?

Well, people label and stereotype to categorize and organize people just as they do for everything else. Labeling simply makes things easier for people to understand. People also use labels to "fit in" or figure out where they belong. On the other hand, labels are often unwanted, and stereotypes not only incorrect but hurtful as well.

I'll even give you an example from my own life (lucky you!): Since I was a kid, people have labeled me as a "good student" and maybe even as a "nerd." Therefore, they'd assume that I must want to be a doctor or a lawyer (because those are obviously the only career options for a "good student" right?) and that I must like schoolwork (a logical explanation for my high grades, no doubt.) The latter assumption was most often made during my middle school years. You'd probably agree that these are quite common assumptions about people who perform well in school. However, these assumptions are, of course, wrong. Frankly, I'm not the biggest fan of studying law and I definitely do not enjoy being around sick people (I'm a bit of a germaphobe). And to be honest I hate most schoolwork, especially homework. I've always thought that this assumption was particularly dumb; who actually enjoys doing homework? Although, I'll have to admit that these assumptions are at worst annoying, and people don't think of me as a nerd by my appearance and most don't exactly treat me like one. I could go on and on with this list of stereotypes and labels people have given me, as I'm sure almost anyone could, but I'd rather not right now.

You'd think that after meeting someone who obviously does not fit a stereotype, you would stop associating that person with the stereotype. That this would be especially true after numerous people explained that their stereotypes are wrong. That would be logical, right? Unfortunately, people don't change stereotypes very often. If they do, they either adjust the stereotype to fit, create a sub-stereotype or, as a final resort, discard of the old stereotype and start a new one (if the old stereotype was extremely wrong). As you can see, it's very difficult to get rid of a stereotype. The somewhat good news is if you constantly act differently from a stereotype, people will eventually stop associating you with it, or at least change it. But even if you just can't seem to get rid of a stereotype, try not to let it bother you too much. That stereotype about you isn't going to last forever, and chances are there are plenty of people who know it isn't true.

It's not like everyone purposely labels and stereotypes you, though admittedly some people purposely do. It can be a subconscious action, even if you strive not to label people or expect them to act a certain way. The worst part is, while it seems that almost everyone is constantly complaining about labeling and stereotyping, many of them hypocritically do it too (even if they don't realize it).

If you're going to label people, at least use positive labels. If you catch yourself thinking negatively about someone because of a stereotype, try to disregard it. Everyone is sick of the negative labels and stereotypes, and I'm sure you are too. Stop assuming negative things about people, it's not making anything better for anyone. In fact, you probably don't like being stereotyped or labeled anymore than anyone else. Seriously, think about all the labels and stereotypes you've been given, especially the hurtful ones, and ask yourself if anyone really deserves that. I'd like to think no one does, and I really, really try not label or stereotype anyone, especially if I don't know them. (Did I mention I've been labeled as "too nice"?) If everyone would try to be just a little more open-minded, maybe everyone would have more friends, and less enemies. I'd like to think I do. It's perfectly fine to label objects, just don't categorize people.

I'd really like to hear you opinion on this article, and labels and stereotypes. Maybe you could share some of the ways people have stereotyped or labeled you? After all, other people might read about it and stop stereotyping people like you. Who knows?

The Problem With Fad Diets

If you've ever tried a fad diet, you might already know that they don't work. Why? Because they're fads. Which means they're temporary. And most experts agree that diets should be a lifestyle, which would mean a long-lasting diet. Generally, even if you do lose the weight, you'll just gain it back once you start eating normally. Also, most fad diets lack nutrition and vitamins, and are often eaten in larger portions. Some can even become life-threatening.

Instead of following fad diets, try eating balanced and varied meals. Researchers say the best way to lose weight is simple: eat less calories than you burn. Try exercising daily and eating normal sized portions, too.

Diaries, Journals, and Logs, Oh My!

Do you keep a diary, journal, or log? If you do, you probably know of some of the benefits writing in it has. If you don't, I'll give you a few reasons why you should consider it.
I know that making yourself sit down to write in a diary (especially for the first time) can be difficult, but it's so worth it. Actually, yesterday I started writing in the diary that I've had since I was eight (as I've said before, I have a procrastination problem). As a result it's pink with hearts all over it, but it still works. Anyway, writing in it felt great! It's a good way to vent, or talk about anything, really. My brain is no longer over-flowing with thoughts, since I now have somewhere to store them. The best part is you don't have to be afraid of what anyone else will think because it's private.

Writing in a journal daily can make you a better writer, more organized, less stressed, more honest, more disciplined, and, of course, give you a place to store memories. You become more organized by organizing your thoughts, more honest because you don't lie to your diary (or at least, I hope you don't) and more disciplined if you make yourself write every day. For me, the memory apsect is the best part. I'm a pretty nostalgic person, constantly thinking about how fast time passes, so memories are really important to me.
If you aren't currently keeping one, try to find inspiration. My inspiration was my old diary from first grade (and the need for venting). I found the journal in box and started reading, and I was enjoying it, but about half way through the writing ended. I couldn't really remember what happened next, and I realized I wouldn't be able to remember the things happening now in a while either. And neither will you.
Here's something else I discovered while researching this topic: dream logs. Basically, you keep a journal next to your bed and as soon as you wake up you write about your dream, before you forget it. I've never tried it, but it sounds useful if you've had a particularly interesting dream.
So, are you convinced, or is writing in a journal just not your thing? I'd advise that you at least try it. Tell me what you think, and if you know any other pros or cons of writing in a journal.

8 Common Things You (and Everyone Else) Should Stop Doing

This is simply a list of bad habits (excluding obvious ones like smoking, drugs, and alcohol) that so many people have and need to break. And if you do something on this list, don't worry, you're not alone.

1. Tanning:

For some reason, people still tan even though most know the consequences: sunburn, wrinkles, sunspots, or even skin cancer. Do yourself (and your skin) a favor and use a self tanner instead. You only need about 15 minutes of sun exposure to produce enough vitamin D. Moderation is fine; just stop making regular indoor tanning appointments and sitting out in the sun all day without sunscreen. Eventually, your tan will fade, but your leathery skin won't.
2. Obsessing About Your Weight:

Is it really necessary to get on the scale a million times a day? It's even worse if you see the number go up a pound or two throughout the day. Do you have to know the exact number of calories you've consumed today? Maybe your answer is yes, but try to stop stressing over it so much; stress can make you gain more weight. Many people say it's your health, B.M.I., and waistline and other measurements that really matter. Gaining muscle while losing fat might make your weight go up, even though you'll look better and be healthier. However, the scale doesn't know the difference. Or maybe it's the opposite for you and you want to gain weight. Either way, it's good to care about your weight and lead a healthy lifestyle, but it might not be such a great idea to obsess over it.
3. Procrastinating:

Procrastinating is an awful habit, and a very difficult one to break. I procrastinate a lot, too. Unfortunately, putting a task off won't make it disappear. While your trying to do something fun, you're distracted by the work you have to do, and worrying about getting it done. Usually you're just wasting time. Don't put off your goals either, especially the long term ones. If you do you'll never get anywhere. In the end it's much easier to get work out of the way, and if you don't you'll wish you had later.
4. Sitting in Front of the TV All Day:

Watching too much television is simply unhealthy. Not only does it "rot" your brain, it's also addicting, used as an escape from reality, and can raise the risk of premature death. You're also more prone to unhealthy snacking. Of course, there's nothing wrong with an hour or two of relaxing-- just don't let it become hours of mindless TV watching. In fact, one study found that people who spent more than four hours in front of the television were 46% more likely to die prematurely of any cause, and 80% more likely to die from heart disease. Interestingly though, the study found that activities like reading and writing don't effect people as badly as watching TV.
5. Following Bad Fashion Trends:

Sometimes following fashion trends aren't such a great idea-- especially when they're bad trends. If you think it's ugly or dumb, don't follow the trend just to fit in. You wouldn't want another fashion regret. Especially if you followed that bad trend for years. A recent example? Those circle lenses inspired by Lady Gaga. They aren't necessarily ugly, but there are many health concerns regarding them and they're illegal in the US. I recently read an article about someone who tried them because she wanted to seem young or cool. Probably a bad idea. Although, if you really love fashion, feel free to try the trends, as long as they aren't health hazardous.
6. Thinking Negatively:

Most likely, negative thoughts aren't going to lead to happiness. They can even get so bad that you convince yourself that something obviously good is bad. Sometimes these thoughts can even lead to depression. Try to see the world from a more positive perspective. Trust me, you'll have so much more to smile about.

7. Taking Everything For Granted:

It really annoys me that most people walk around not appreciating anything, or thinking everything will be the same forever. You know that saying, "you don't know what you have until it's gone"? I know too many people who don't even bother trying to recognize what they have, while they still have it. I'd rather not regret not appreciating something I had while it was still there.
8. Doing Nothing:

Don't just sit around waiting for a better life to find you-- it probably won't, and life is just too short to wait. Set some short-term goals that lead to a long-term one and start making an effort to accomplish something. Find some hobbies and make some more friends, too. It's way more enjoyable than wasting your life away doing nothing. Stop waiting for something big to happen, because even if it does things might not go the way you think they will afterward.
So, what do you think? Obviously this list could be much longer, but do you think I left out something really important? Let me know. I'll probably write more about a few of these topics in the future. Oh, and if you need any help with getting rid of one of these bad habits, try the advice section.

The First Post!

Since this is my first blog, I decided to look up some tips for starting a blog. Most of these just said something like, "just start writing" which is not very helpful at all. Well, I decided to take the advice anyway since no one is currently reading this blog. I only found one helpful site for blogging "how-to" stuff, which was howtomakemyblog.com.

Oh, and this isn't going to be a very personal blog. I think there are already plenty of those, and I don't think anyone would read my blog if it was completely personal. Not that I'd want them to.

I already have some ideas for my first few posts, which I will probably start posting tomorrow. Please feel free to comment and share your opinions. Also let me know if you think I should add something.
